Veteran Tribune Co.-owned WGN-Channel 9 entertainment reporter and critic Dean Richards has interviewed hundreds of Hollywood stars over the years, but none of them ever ended quite like the one with Academy Award-winning actor and director Mel Gibson.
The five-minute satellite interview was set up last week to promote Gibson’s new action movie “Edge of Darkness.” But at the end of the Q&A, Richards asked about the “ups and downs” of Gibson’s career, including his drinking problems and anti-Semitic rants. It was a line of questioning Gibson obviously was unwilling and unprepared to entertain.
Gibson said he had done his “mea culpas” for all that and kept telling Richards to “move on, dude.” Then after Gibson apparently thought the interview was over and the camera turned off, the actor muttered the word “a------,” seemingly meant as a derogatory comment about the WGN reporter who had just quizzed him
Richards said he was unfazed by the incident.
