of take so long to shake hands

I just witnessed a group of schoolboys exchanging a series of handshakes at the MRT station. They shook hands with one another and then they parted ways. Those handshakes are those that has pattern more than badminton. Completing 1 handshake takes about 7 to 8 seconds. There were 10 schoolboys in that group. That means more than a minute was spent doing those handshakes.

Suspicious Behaviour On The Tube

This guy got arrested when taking the tube to work because the police were acting under the authority of the Terrorism Act.
I am told that I am being stopped and searched because:
- they found my behaviour suspicious from direct observation and then from watching me on the CCTV system;
- I went into the station without looking at the police officers at the entrance or by the gates;
- two other men entered the station at about the same time as me;
- I am wearing a jacket "too warm for the season";
- I am carrying a bulky rucksack, and kept my rucksack with me at all times;
- I looked at people coming on the platform;
- I played with my phone and then took a paper from inside my jacket.

Diet Furikake is Japanese style dieting. It is a flavored and blue seasoning to be sprinkled on rice so that your brain will form a negative image of it.
The human brain distinguishes between "pleasant" and "non-pleasant" and makes the body avoid non-pleasant things. As 70% of the information sent to the brain comes from visual perception, you can -so they say- program your brain to reject carbs through an unpleasant view of carbohydrate food and stop overeating.

of money well spent

Yesterday, I went to a block of flats that are under the Social Services. These 1-room flats were catered for senior citizens, mostly living alone.

It had been 2 years since my last visit to these flats. Now that it has been upgraded, it looks better. Before upgrading, the corridors were dark. Lifts did not reach every floor. Something which is inconvenient for the elderly who had to climb a few flight of stairs to get to the lift.

To allow more light to enter the corridors, one unit near the lift landing was demolished. There were also some lights along the corridors that are switched on all day, something that is essential for the senior citizens staying there. And in case of a blackout, the emergency backup light will be triggered.

They even fixed handrails (which does not come cheap. $30 per meter) along the entire corridor. Quite thoughtful.

But the feature I found most essential was the Alert Alarm System. 2 trigger switches are installed in the living room and in the toilet. Once it is triggered, say in the event that the person in the flat needs emergency help, a light outside the flat will be lighted and the LED display at all the lift landings will show your flat number.

The alarm will be activated at the Seniors Activity Center, run by a group of volunteers from Fei Yue, located at the void deck. Then help will arrive to check on the particular flat in need.

I have taken a few snapshots of the pamphlet to describe how the Alert Alarm System works.

Gahmen has spent quite a lot on upgrading this flat. At least I find that this is money well spent. And most importantly, the occupants do not need to fork out a single cent.

of just tip it

An National Environment Agency (NEA) Officer just paid a visit to our house. He showed his pass and explained that he was sent by the agency to look out for potential breeding spots within the flats in my block. So we let him in. He spent a few seconds in the kitchen, asked a few questions and left.

The person gave a few tips on preventing mosquitoes from breeding. lancerlady asked a few questions and the person's replies were sensible.

Good effort by the authorities.

But after he left, it struck me whether the person was really from NEA. This was the first time we have seen a NEA pass, so we cannot tell whether it was genuine. But he sounded professional and knows his stuff.
