of russian flying fortresses

Russian Flying Fortresses: Russian history lovers have reconstructed a huge Russian plane based on plans left in once to top-secret Russian army archives.
In 1930s Russian army was … by the idea of creating huge planes. At that times they were proposed to have as much propellers as possible to help carrying those huge flying fortresses into the air, jet propulsion has not been implemented at those times yet.

Not much photos were saved since that times, because of the high secrecy levels of such projects and because a lot of time passed already. Still on the photo below you can see one of such planes - a heavy bomber K-7.

of phrases from the quran appear spotaneously on baby's skin

Phrases from the Quran appear ’spontaneously’ on baby’s skin: Baby (Quran Baby) is making news in Russia after phrases from the Quran began appearing on his skin.
Verses from the Quran – the Muslim holy book are said to appear on nine-month-old Ali Yakubov’s back, arms, legs and stomach – before apparently fading away and being replaced with new sayings.

Russian medics claimed they are puzzled over the cause of the marks on a baby’s skin, which started when the word Allah apparently appeared on his chin within weeks of his birth.

Medics deny that the marks are from someone writing on the child’s skin.

His mother, Madina, said that she and her husband were not religious until the writings started appearing on his skin.

of russian teen has britney's face tattooed on her breasts before concert

Russian teen has Britney's face tattooed on her breasts before concert: Irina Savina had a huge portrait of Britney Spears tattooed on her breasts before The Circus show in Moscow.

Irina Savina and her Britney Spears tattoo
A teenage Russian girl was so excited about finally seeing Britney Spears live at a concert in Moscow, that she had a huge portrait of the pop princess tattooed on her breasts.

Britney brought her The Circus show to Russia this summer with two concerts in the two major cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow. The singer did her St. Petersburg show on Sunday in front of 15,000 spectators, and her Moscow concert is scheduled for Monday.

Irina Savina, 18, came all the way from the Urals city of Yekaterinburg to see Britney perform in Moscow.

When she first learned Spears was coming to Russia, she was so happy she wanted to preserve the memory of that joy forever.
Irina told Life.ru,
I've been listening to Britney Spears since primary school. She's the soundtrack of my life. When I told my parents I wanted to have Britney tattooed on my breasts, they rejected my idea flat. But after two days of my begging them, Dad gave me the money for the tattoo.
During the concert in the Olympisky Stadium of Moscow Irina hopes to get as near the stage as possible and show Britney the fresh tattoo that features the star's portrait, signed “Britney.”

of dare the train!

Dare the Train: Russian teens risking their lives on the railway track.
Russian teens have now new fun. They dare trains. This is needed to be done fast, because if one is appearing before the train too long before and machinist could see him and start breaking, so they run on the rails just before the train so he couldn’t start breaking and fell down on the rails, then the train moves above the person at his maximum speed, just a few inches from his head and back. Russian teen girls seem to go for this too.

Vote for Russia's 'Miss Atom' 2009

Meet Alyona Kirsanova of Novovoronezh, one of the contestants in Russia's "Miss Atom" 2009. She is 22, works for Novovoronezhatomenergoremont, and loves "enjoying life." Don't you just want to take a dip in the cooling pond with her?

Alyona is a first-time contestant in "Miss Atom," an annual beauty contest open to (female) employees of Russia's nuclear industry. This is shaping up as a perennial favorite for readers of DANGER ROOM (as well as for Arms Control Wonk, who tried to rig the voting back in 2007). Click here to meet this year's roster of nuclear supervixens. Of course, we frown on this kind of contest at home; we'd prefer something a little more retro, like Miss Atomic Bomb.

of big satellites collide 500 miles over siberia

Big satellites collide 500 miles over Siberia: Two big communications satellites collided in the first-ever crash of two intact spacecraft in orbit, shooting out a pair of massive debris clouds and posing a slight risk to the international space station. NASA said it will take weeks to determine the full magnitude of the crash, which occurred nearly 500 miles over Siberia on Tuesday.
NASA believes any risk to the space station and its three astronauts is low. It orbits about 270 miles below the collision course. There also should be no danger to the space shuttle set to launch with seven astronauts on Feb. 22, officials said, but that will be re-evaluated in the coming days.

The collision involved an Iridium commercial satellite, which was launched in 1997, and a Russian satellite launched in 1993 and believed to be nonfunctioning. The Russian satellite was out of control, Matney said.

The Iridium craft weighed 1,235 pounds, and the Russian craft nearly a ton.

No one has any idea yet how many pieces were generated or how big they might be.
Mark Matney, an orbital debris scientist at Johnson Space Center in Houston, said
We knew this was going to happen eventually. Right now, they're definitely counting dozens. I would suspect that they'll be counting hundreds when the counting is done.
As for pieces the size of micrometers, the count will likely be in the thousands, he added.

There have been four other cases in which space objects have collided accidentally in orbit, NASA said. But those were considered minor and involved parts of spent rockets or small satellites.

Nicholas Johnson, an orbital debris expert at the Houston space center, said the risk of damage from Tuesday's collision is greater for the Hubble Space Telescope and Earth-observing satellites, which are in higher orbit and nearer the debris field.

At the beginning of this year there were roughly 17,000 pieces of manmade debris orbiting Earth, Johnson said. The items, at least 4 inches in size, are being tracked by the U.S. Space Surveillance Network, which is operated by the military. The network detected the two debris clouds created Tuesday.

Anchorage Officials kill Snowzilla

The Giant Alaskan Snowzilla
Snowzilla, the giant Alaskan snowman who had become a famous annual attraction in Anchorage is no more, after city officials decided to ban his building this year.

Snowzilla started in 2005 when Anchorage local Billy Powers decided he wanted to build something special for Christmas. The giant snowman, originally 16 feet (5m) tall but slightly bigger in following years gained national, then international attention, bringing camera crews from as far away as Japan and Russia to film Snowzilla in the wild.
