Taiwanese pop star injured during filming in China: Selina (of S.H.E) and Yu Haoming (俞灏明) sustained burns while filming an explosion scene for the TV Drama ("我和春天有个约会") in China. Both stars were admitted into Rui Jing Hospital (瑞金医院).

A member of Taiwan's pop group S.H.E sustained burns during the shooting of an explosion scene for a TV drama series in China, reports said yesterday. Selina Ren suffered third-degree burns to her back, hands and legs in the accident that took place on Friday, and was admitted to a hospital in Shanghai, the reports said. Her agent was cited as saying her family is discussing with the hospital over arrangements to fly her back to Taiwan for the skin transplant operations. No problems were found during several tests of the explosives before the actual shooting, said the reports. But the explosives went off earlier than the set time when the actual filming started. Ren was filming in Shanghai alone without Hebe Tien and Ella Chen, her partners in the popular group.

The weather data also showed that the intensity of the said tropical storm was decreasing in the past three hours. But the strong wind and heavy rain continue. It’s now moving westward at 20 km per hour, with the maximum wind speed at 40 m per second, equals to 13 in terms of wind scale.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake jolted southern Taiwan on Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths but some damage has occurred to buildings and major bridges, and power was cut off near the epicenter.

The quake struck at about 8:20 a.m. (7:20 p.m. Wednesday ET) in a mountainous region about 25 miles northwest of Taitung, on the southeast coast, and 40 miles east of Tainan and Kaohsiung on the southwest coast.

The region, which includes Maolin National Scenic Area, is recovering from a direct hit by Typhoon Morakot that killed hundreds in August. The typhoon dumped more than two feet of rain, causing serious mudslides in the south, including one that buried the village of Shiao Lin under 50 feet of mud.

Local TV reports said four minor casualties were reported in the capital. The reports said Taipei's subways and the island's high speed railroad were suspended.

There was some damage to property in a community near the quake's epicenter.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan but most are minor and cause little or no damage.

Chinese worker commits suicide over missing iPhoneo: Sun Danyong jumped from the 12th floor of his apartment building after losing a fourth-generation iPhone prototype units. Sun, a worker at Foxconn Technology Group which produces Apple products, was responsible for sending iPhone prototypes to Apple.

An employee at a factory that makes iPhones in China killed himself after a prototype went missing, and Apple Inc. responded Wednesday by saying its suppliers are required to treat workers with dignity and respect.The dead worker, Sun Danyong, 25, worked in product communications at Foxconn Technology Group, a Taiwanese firm that makes many Apple products at a massive factory in the southern city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong.

Although Apple and Foxconn have confirmed Sun's suicide, they have not provided details about the circumstances, which have been reported by the state-run Southern Metropolis Daily, one of the region's most popular papers.

Sun was responsible for sending iPhone prototypes to Apple, and on July 13 he reported that he was missing one of the 16 fourth-generation units in his possession, the newspaper reported. His friends said company security guards searched his apartment, detained him and beat him, the paper reported.

In the early morning of July 16, Sun jumped from the 12th floor of his apartment building, the paper said.
