Dutch teen who sought solo sailing trip disappears

A teenage Dutch sailor who made headlines when she went to court to fight for the right to sail solo around the world has gone missing, police said Sunday.

Laura Dekker's boat, Guppy, is still moored at its usual berth and the 14-year-old appears to have left her father's home on her own, Utrecht police spokesman Bernhard Jens told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

A COUPLE who caused a stir by strolling down naked along Lorong Mambong earlier this year were charged in court on Thursday. Jan Philip, 21, a Swedish student on exchange programme, and Eng Kai Er, 24, a university student in Sweden, are accused of appearing nude in public at Holland Village at about 11pm on Jan 24. Both were clad in black suits when they appeared before District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan. Their lawyer, Mr William Chan, asked for an adjournment to write in to the Attorney-General's Chambers. If convicted, both may be fined up to $2,000 and/or jailed for up to three months. As Philip is a foreigner, he was offered bail of $5,000 but Eng, a Singaporean, need not post bail. Philip's passport was impounded. They will be back in court on April 30.

Update: Nude woman identifed as Singaporean A*STAR scholar

The woman is Singaporean Eng Kai Er, 24, who is studying at a Swedish university, and the man, a Swedish student on exchange here in Singapore, is Jan Philip, 21. Eng, described as a petite woman with short hair, is an A*Star (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) scholarship holder. She was also a member of Mensa, an association whose members are defined by their high IQs. According to the A*Star website, she is pursuing a PhD in infection biology at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. During her teen years, Eng represented Singapore as a competitive ice skater in Skate Asia, the largest ice-skating competition outside the United States.

Initial reports said that one person died in the wreckage. But The Associated Press quoted Turkish Airlines as saying that there were no deaths among the 127 passengers and seven crew on the plane, Turkish Airlines flight TK1951, that left Istanbul at 8:22 a.m. on Wednesday. Temel Kotil, the chief executive of the airline, said at a news conference in Istanbul that 20 people were injured in the accident. The crash took place in calm weather with a light drizzle. Unlike a deadly accident in Madrid last summer when a Spanair flight crashed while taking off, no fire broke out during Wednesday’s crash. The Turkish aircraft would have been low on fuel as it approached its destination.

This is the man charged with having obscene films: Pang Leong Chuan was charged along with Rev Ming Yi. Pang faces six charges of possessing 138 uncertified and obscene films.

THE name Pang Leong Chuan did not ring a bell for Ren Ci chairman Chua Thian Poh. No, Pang was never hired at the charity, he told reporters yesterday. But Dr Ong Seh Hong, Ren Ci's acting chief executive, set him right: Yes, Pang had been an employee, but only for 'a short while'. Pang, 27, was the personal assistant to Buddhist monk Ming Yi, the charity's former chief executive.

He was charged along with Ming Yi and two others on Tuesday, although initially the charges against him seemed unlinked to Ren Ci. Pang faces six charges of possessing 138 uncertified and obscene films. Police seized most of the films from an apartment at The Cornwall, an upmarket condominium off Holland Road.

Pang and Ming Yi were believed to have stayed at the flat occasionally. Residents said they had seen the monk and two men returning there at night. The rest of the films were found at Pang's Tampines address.

Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) will carry 'live' the judgement on Pulau Batu Putih (Pedra Branca) by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherlands on May 23. Viewers can catch the 'live' telecast on RTM1 at 4pm, a Broadcasting Department statement said here today. The ICJ judgement will be delivered by its vice president and acting president for overlapping claims on Pulau Batu Putih, Judge Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh. Malaysia and Singapore are involved in a tussle for sovereignty over Pulau Batu Putih, each laying claim to the 0.2-hectare island (the size of two football fields) since 28 years ago.
