Former Indonesian diplomat Ali Alatas has died: Former Foreign Minister Ali Alatas has died at the age of 76. Senior government official Primo Alui Joelianto confirmed that Mr Alatas died in Singapore, one week after suffering a stroke.
Alatas was the country's top foreign diplomat from 1988 until 1999 — the year after longtime dictator Suharto was forced from power. He later served as Indonesia's permanent representative to the United Nations, chaired many international seminars and, most recently, acted as an adviser to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
