of top singapore officials trash the neighbours (wikileaks)

Top Singapore officials trash the neighbours : WikiLeaks has leaked cables to The Sunday Age detailing contents of meetings between senior US officials and Singapore's foreign affairs chiefs Peter Ho, Bilahari Kausikan and Tommy Goh.

The cables covered conversations of meetings:
- March 2008, between Mr Peter Ho and an unnamed US official about Mahathir Mohamad and Abdullah Badawi.
- September 2008, between Mr Kausikan and US Deputy Secretary of Defence for East Asia David Sedney. In this meeting Mr Kausikan talked about Malaysia and Dato' Sri Najib Razak. He also talked about Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra and the Thai Crown Prince. Other issues he talked about covered: Burma and its neighbours (China and India). The Nuclear-capable North Korea. Russia and its economy.
- September 2009, Professor Tommy Goh and US senior officials about Japan, China and India.
According to one cable detailing a meeting in September 2008, Mr Kausikan told US Deputy Secretary of Defence for East Asia David Sedney that ”the situation in neighbouring Malaysia is confused and dangerous”, fuelled by a ”distinct possibility of racial conflict” that could see ethnic Chinese ”flee” Malaysia and ”overwhelm” Singapore.

”A lack of competent leadership is a real problem for Malaysia,” Mr Kausikan said, citing the need for Najib Razak – now Malaysia’s Prime Minister – to ”prevail politically in order to avoid prosecution” in connection with a 2006 murder investigation linked to one of Mr Razak’s aides.

”Najib Razak has his neck on the line in connection with a high-profile murder case,” Mr Kausikan said.

Mr Ho’s March 2008 assessment of Malaysia, given to another US official, is also unflattering, and includes claims that former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has been ”throwing stones” at his replacement, Abdullah Badawi.

”The political knives will be out for Abdullah’s son-in-law, United Malays National Organisation politician Khairy Jamaluddin, whom nobody likes because he got where he is through family ties,” the cable records Mr Ho saying. ”As for … Najib Razak, he is an opportunist. Although he has not been critical of Singapore, he will not hesitate to go in that direction if it is expedient for him to do so. Najib’s political fortunes continue to be haunted by the … murder scandal.”

In his September 2008 meeting with Mr Sedney, Mr Kausikan savages Thailand’s political elite, labelling Thaksin Shinawatra as ”corrupt” along with ”everyone else, including the opposition”.

Mr Kausikan is also critical of Thaksin’s relationship with the Thai crown prince, stating that Thaksin ”made a mistake in pursuing a relationship with the crown prince by paying off the crown prince’s gambling debts”.

”Kausikan said the crown prince was ‘very erratic, and easily subject to influence’,” the cable states, while also saying that Mr Kausikan warned of continued instability in Thailand.

In a September 2009 meeting with US officials, senior Singaporean foreign affairs official Tommy Koh savages Japan and India in relation to the impact on both countries of China’s increasing regional might.

”Koh described Japan as ‘the big fat loser’ in the context of improving ties between China and ASEAN. He attributed the relative decline of Japan’s stature in the region to Japan’s ‘stupidity, bad leadership, and lack of vision’,” the cable says.

”He was equally merciless towards India, describing his ‘stupid Indian friends’ as ‘half in, half out’ of ASEAN.”

Other notable comments about regional affairs made by Mr Kausikan in September 2008 include his reported claims that:

■ Burma’s neighbours, including China and India, are ”more concerned with stability than justice” and they feared the Burmese junta’s demise could produce ”an Asian reprise of the breakup of Yugoslavia”.

■ He would be ”more comfortable with a nuclear-capable North Korea, than a nuclear-capable Iran”.

■ Russia’s economy is ”Third World”, its health system a shambles and its demographic challenges almost insurmountable.

Mr Koh is recorded praising China’s ”investment and intelligent diplomacy in the region”.

”I don’t fear China. I don’t fear being assimilated by China,” the cable states that Mr Koh said, while he pointed to China’s decision to invest in Africa ”without lecturing them about human rights and democracy as the West does”.

A dreadful blunder by England goalkeeper Robert Green gifted the USA with a share of the spoils as Fabio Capello's side were held 1-1 in their Group C opener. Steven Gerrard had given the Three Lions' World Cup campaign a flying start with a fourth-minute opener in Rustenburg. England were holding that advantage until Green committed the kind of howler David Seaman, Paul Robinson and Scott Carson have all done down the years and allowed Clint Dempsey's harmless shot to slip through his fingers.

Actress Charlize Theron co-hosting the Final Draw show in Cape Town
The 32 teams participating at next year's FIFA World Cup™ finals discovered their fate this evening when the Final Draw for South Africa 2010 took place in Cape Town.

An estimated global television audience of 200 million joined the 2,000 invited guests in the Draw Hall in watching the colourful and entertaining ceremony unfold. With African sporting stars such as athlete Haile Gebreselassie, rugby player John Smit, cricketer Makhaya Ntini, and footballers Matthew Booth and Simphiwe Dludlu assisting with the draw, along with England icon David Beckham, it was always going to be an exhilarating evening, but the undoubted centrepiece came when the eight groups were revealed.

While South Africans smiled upon learning that the host nation's Opening Match on 11 June would be played against Mexico at Soccer City, it was the outcome of Group D which caused the biggest stir. Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana will battle it out for the two qualifying places for the Round of 16, meaning that two nations with a proud footballing heritage will have to depart the tournament early.

Miss Pilar Carmelita Arlando, 20, who bagged the second runner-up prize at the Miss Singapore World 2009 pageant will represent Singapore at the Miss World finals in South Africa.

The original winner, Miss Ris Low, quit her title last month after news of her being under 24 months' probation for credit card fraud, was reported.

[Her parents] have agreed to allow their daughter to resign from the crown as we feel is in the best interest for the Miss Singapore World Pageant and Singapore at large. of miss singapore world, ris low, guilty of credit-card fraud

Guilty of credit card fraud: my paper reports that Miss Singapore World, Ris Low, was sentenced in May this year to 24 months of supervised probation for credit-card fraud. The beauty queen was convicted of five charges of misappropriation, cheating using illegally obtained credit cards, and impersonating their users' identities.
Court documents show that Miss Low spent a total of more than $2,400 on at least four separate occasions, using at least three different credit cards in April and May last year.

my paper understands that her previous employer, a health-care company, made a police report about her in April last year.

It suspected that Miss Low, who worked there for five months as a patient-service assistant, had used credit cards belonging to its patients. It asked her to leave the following month.

Before leaving, she was said to have returned a part - an unspecified sum - of the total amount she had spent using the cards.

When contacted, Miss Low, now a student, said that she was "not in a position to comment".

The international Miss World pageant will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in December. It is unclear whether Miss Low will be allowed to leave the country to take part in it.

sorry couldn't find a name for this animal ..but looks cute .[PIC]

[via reddit]

Update: Ivan, a nature and wildlife lover, has identified this as an African Civet. Thanks Ivan.
The African Civet is a common viverrid native to tropical Africa. Unlike many other members of the family, which resemble cats, the African Civet resembles a short dog-like animal. Its coarse coat varies but is usually an ornate pattern of black and white contrasting bands and blotches, with a white face mask and black eye patches (like that of a raccoon) and a pale muzzle. Like all civets it has perianal glands that produce a fluid known as civetone (used in the perfume industry), which it spreads on markers in its territory to claim its range. (In fact, "civet" was originally the name for the scent obtained from this species: Middle French civette, from Old Italian zibetto, from Arabic zabAd, civet perfume.)

of 'atlantis' spotted on ocean floor off africa

Is this Atlantis?: THIS is the amazing image which could show the fabled sunken city of Atlantis.

Map from Atlantis ... spotted on ocean floor
It shows a perfect rectangle the size of Wales lying on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 3½ miles down.

A host of criss-crossing lines, looking like a map of a vast metropolis, are enclosed by the boundary.

The site lies 620 miles off the west coast of Africa near the Canary Islands — a location for Atlantis seemingly suggested by the ancient philosopher Plato.

He believed it was an island civilisation sunk by an earthquake and floods around 9,700BC — nearly 12,000 years ago.

of racism row over chimp cartoon sparks debate

Racism row over chimp cartoon sparks debate: Some say cartoon posted at New York Post is racist, others say it's misunderstood.

Reactions are as varied as they are strong to Tuesday's New York Post cartoon that depicted the police shooting of a chimpanzee. Two police officers, one with a smoking gun, are near the chimp's bullet-pierced body. "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill," one officer says.

The Post's Sean Delonas used a typical editorial cartoon trope of linking two current news stories: the shooting of a chimp after it mauled a Connecticut woman and President Obama's signing of the stimulus bill.

But soon after the issue hit newsstands, the Rev. Al Sharpton -- and other black opinion makers like CNN's Roland Martin -- blasted the cartoon as an attack on Obama's skin color and African-Americans in general.
