HERO: CSG pilot Steve Bolle has been hailed a hero
In what has been likened to the amazing Hudson River landing last month, Steve Bolle managed to safely land his Piper Chieftain in shallow water about 200m off the shore at East Point about 8.40am. All six people on board were able to walk to shore and none required medical treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital.
Mr Bolle had experienced engine trouble not even two minutes after taking off from Darwin Airport. Mr Bolle, who has more than 8000 hours of flying experience, and his five passengers all work for CSG – one of Australia's leading IT services companies based in Darwin. The technicians were flying to Maningrida, about 500km east of Darwin, for a day trip to perform routine maintenance on computers at the health clinic, police station and school.
CSG managing director Denis Mackenzie told the Northern Territory News that Mr Bolle deserved commendation.
The pilot and two passengers walk safely to shore after the plane they were in made a crash landing off East Point.
