The Spanair MD82 aircraft had lost power to its left engine during take-off and it crashed near the end of the runway.
The footage, filmed by emergency teams, shows an area of land that was left black and charred after the aircraft burst into flames shortly after takeoff. Spanair, which owned the doomed plane, has now confirmed that a gauge detected overheating while the plane was taxiing - forcing a first takeoff attempt to be aborted. Technicians corrected the problem by turning off the gauge - standard practice according to Spanair spokesman Javier Mendoza, who said the device was not needed for takeoff. After the correction, the plane was cleared to fly - only to crash off the Madrid runway, killing almost all of the 175 people on board.
